TV Recap: Big Brother 10 - Week 8 Veto

“We’re all in the same boat. We’re all on the S.S. Jerry and we’re going whichever way the boat’s takin’ us.” - Dan Dan’s partially right. As Head of Household, Jerry has a fair amount of control in the Big Brother house but at this point in the game, the Power of Veto carries a lot of weight and whoever wins that could seriously upset Jerry’s goal for the week, which is to get Judas-Dan out of the house. Tonight we got to see whether or not the Renegades have a shot at making the final-four.

Before the PoV comp, we got some more amusing filler, including Jerry falling into the pool and Dan making every effort to push Renny’s buttons. When the houseguests spotted some sky-writing, Jerry proceeded to walk backwards while trying to read the words spread out across the sky. As if in slow motion, he casually stepped right into the pool. Dan checked to make sure he was ok and then had a good chuckle about it in the diary room.

And speaking of Dan, he’s been going out of his way to drive Renny crazy, partially for his own amusement I’m sure, though he says that he wants to unravel her so that she won’t perform well in the Veto competition. Little did he realize, Renny wouldn’t need Dan’s help for that. Tonight we got to see Dan playing a game popular among young grade-schoolers. He copied everything Renny did until he finally got her to laugh. Later the two bickered about something I couldn’t quite follow and it ended with Renny smacking Dan on the butt. Their relationship totally confuses me. I can’t tell if Renny loves him or despises him sometimes.

After the nominations, Keesha and Dan had an awkward chat about being nominated. I wish there were little thought bubbles above their heads to spell out all of the things neither was willing to say out loud. The conversation basically consisted of both agreeing that anything could happen. Keesha wants Renny to stay. Dan wants Memphis to stay. Neither want to be the ones walking out the door. That last part is pretty much the only thing the two were willing to actually admit to. In the end they know one of the alliance of four would be walking out the door this Thursday and if they wanted to guaranty that that person wasn’t going to be them, they’d need to win the Veto for themselves.

What wasn’t shown in the episode tonight was that the houseguests were served wine the night that they were to play for the PoV. From what Keesha says in this video, they weren’t aware that the competition would be taking place that night when they started drinking. That didn’t stop Renny and Keesha from finishing off the wine and it’s possible that the drinks affected their performances in the competition, especially in Renny’s case.

For the Power of Veto competition, the houseguests each took turns trying to guess which two houseguests’ faces were used in each baby picture shown on a screen. Since the photos were chopped together awkwardly, using different parts of each of the two HGs’ faces, the baby pictures were all pretty ugly, although I have to agree with Renny that of all of them, the one made up of Renny and Jessie’s faces was the cutest. Strangely enough, Renny had a hard time figuring out the picture made up of Jerry and Michelle’s faces. She was able to see Michelle’s eyes (which Dan earlier described as devilish) but couldn’t figure out that the bald head and white hair around the sides was clearly Jerry.

Renny’s time was the worst (around 20 minutes) and Jerry’s and Keesha’s were just ok. Memphis beat Dan’s time of 2:58 by eight seconds, awarding him the PoV. Feedwatchers who stayed up all night to find out who won the competition were disappointed when the feeds came back only to show a tired group of houseguests barely speaking as they got ready for bed. It wasn’t until the following day that it was revealed that Memphis had in fact won the Veto. But what would he do with it?

Memphis has an alliance with Keesha, an alliance with Dan and a new alliance for final-two with Jerry, whom he promised he’d keep the nominations the same if he won the Veto. The only person Memphis doesn’t have an alliance with is Renny and given their history (which at best, has been polite acknowledgement of each others’ existance), it seems unlikely that Memphis would be able to seal any kind of deal with her. So naturally, Memphis wants Renny out, despite what he told Jerry prior to the nominations. His best chance of that happening is if he uses the Veto to take Dan off the block.

Memphis sat with Dan the day after the Veto competition and told him that he’ll take him off the block but that he needs to cut the antics. No more messing around. If he takes Dan off, he has to agree to vote out Renny. Dan’s in no position to argue so he said yes of course and he also agreed not to vote to evict Memphis next week if given the opportunity and if Dan gets HoH, he can’t nominate Memphis. Memphis is Dan’s strongest ally so it’s not likely that he would’ve wanted to get Memphis evicted next week anyway so agreeing to Memphis’ terms probably wasn’t all that difficult for him.

Memphis, who has been doing maintenance on all of his alliances this week, sat with Keesha and assured her that no matter what happened, she would be safe this week. He also spoke with Jerry, who wanted reassurance that Memphis would not be using the Veto. He told Jerry that he would be doing what’s best for him but that he plans to honor the final two deal. I don’t know why Jerry said he thought Memphis would not use the Veto after that conversation, considering Memphis all but told him he was going to use it. Regardless, after Memphis did use the Veto, we saw Jerry in the diary room claiming there would be retribution now that Memphis broke his word.

We’ll see about that. This week’s HoH will be huge but it’s the Veto holder that will really have the power. While the Head of Household will have immunity and the power to make nominations, whichever houseguest wins the Veto (if it’s not the HoH), will get to determine who is sent packing this week. Jerry won’t be able to play for HoH so he’ll have to count on winning the Veto or otherwise convincing Keesha, Dan and/or Memphis that it’s in their best interest to target each other rather than him, or the old man’s a goner. But we’re getting way ahead of ourselves. This Thursday night we’ll see which houseguests Dan and Memphis vote to evict and we’ll finally get to see what’s going on in the Jury house!
