TV Recap: Ugly Betty - Things Fall Apart

Oh dear god, Ugly Betty was full of surprises this week. And not good ones either. Some one drained the entire Meade enterprise of its money and some one else was obsessing over a certain ex who I thought, happily, was long gone. On a bright note, any episode that gives me face time with Marc and Amanda makes me giddy.

YETI’s assignment this week is to learn about budgets. When Betty starts looking through Mode’s quarterly budgets, something isn’t adding up. Daniel’s sick and hence is lying in a fancy hotel whining. Instead of bothering her boss, Betty goes to Connor, her boss’ best friend. Connor assures her that the money isn’t missing, it was just moved around in the corporation to help out other magazines. Easy enough explanation but something still isn’t sitting right with Betty.

She goes to Matt (the adorkable sports guy from YETI) for help. Turns out this guy is a semi-genius who has an MBA and a law degree. Oh, and he almost became a large animal vet. Anyways, he told Betty and Marc (mostly Betty) that he could help if she wasn’t very good with numbers. She said no but when Marc explained he was actually asking her out, Betty started thinking about him in a different way. Especially since she just got a friend request from stupid Henry on Facebook and is now obsessing about him and his new girlfriend. Whatever. Stupid Henry. Matt is fully lovable and he tells Betty there is something fishy about the budget stuff. He also tells her he forgot his wallet and so off she goes to get some cash.

A funny thing happened at the ATM, though, and Betty never makes it back to the bar. See, when she checked her bank balance, there was suddenly $100,000 available. She freaks out and runs home to talk to her family, forgetting completely about Matt. She does remember, eventually, after her family tells to her relax and give the money back but when she calls him to apologize, she calls him Henry. Ugh. Henry was soooo boring I could sleep through entire episodes when he was around. I guess the more important problem is the money, though.

Betty goes straight to accounting and they tell her that she authorized the money transfer. Now she’s really confused. She doesn’t even have the authority to transfer money around in Meade. She goes to talk to Daniel but on her way, she’s intercepted by Connor. He says he knows about the money she stole. Then he says no one has to know about anyone stealing money from Meade. And now we know he’s a big ass creep. He not only implicated Betty but also Daniel so there’s no where to go. Still, she goes to Daniel and tells him what’s going on.

Connor, meanwhile, runs straight to Wilhelmina and confesses what he’s done. She’s shocked but tempted to take him up on his offer and run away together. I guess he’s always hated Daniel because of his money and influence. This is his time to get back at him and Wilhelmina can come with him, bring the baby, and never have to worry about anything again. Like I said, she’s tempted. She even has Marc pack up some bags. When he finds out what’s happening, he freaks and asks Willie what she’s going to do. She just gives him the airport and time where they’ll be taking off.

Marc gives the info to Betty, Daniel, and Claire and they race to the airport to stop Willie and Connor. When they get there, Willie is walking to the plane and cops are beginning to swarm. Daniel, Claire and Betty look quite confused and then Willie says she called the cops. Come on guys, like she would really let Connor get away with her entire life? Too late, though. Connor thought Willie might change her mind and took off on an earlier flight. So he’s off and the Meade Corporation is…? I guess we don’t know the end to that sentence quite yet.

Daniel's got other problems of a more personal nature. Molly, who was hinting at needing to talk to Daniel about something throughout the entire episode finally reveals to him that she has cancer. She beat it once before but its back and from the way she put it, this time it doesn't look like she's going to survive it. Daniel wants to talk about it but Molly insists that she just wants to go be with her family and she doesn't seem to want Daniel to feel responsible for going through this with her. She leaves Daniel speechless in his office as she walks off and Claire goes over to offer some comfort to her son.

One thing we do know the answer to is the Henry dilemma. Betty accepts him as her friend on Facebook. Boo. Then she goes to meet super cute Matt and have a proper date. It’s about time they gave Betty some one cute and not uber dorky or cocky to be with. Let’s hope he doesn’t start acting all crazy or annoying like Elisa and Ignacio. Ew. Til next week..
