Blade Runner Final Cut Details

Blade Runner Final Cut Details Fans have been waiting for a long time for a “decent” edition of sci-fi classic Blade Runner to come to DVD. Long denied the original theatrical cut, only the revised “Director’s Cut” has been available to the masses. Theoretically closer to director Ridley Scott’s concept, the revision met with a lot of disagreement from fans. Warner Brothers has been promoting a new “essential 25th anniversary editon” for a while now. An insert in my HD DVD Ultimate Matrix set promised an HD version of the anniversary set in October. A commercial appeared on the AFI’s 100 Years special, but no details have been forthcoming… until today.

It appears this is a set that’s been worth waiting for. Available on DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-Ray, the Blade Runner: The Final Cut DVD set will contain five different versions of the film, including the definitive cut by Ridley Scott. The other versions will include the rare original workprint of the movie, the 1982 theatrical cut, the 1982 international cut, the currently available “director’s cut” and the “final cut” in an effort to show exactly where the movie started and where it has ended.

The “Final Set” will include tons of commentaries, a lenticular motion film clip, an origami unicorn, and more, as well as an over three-hour-long documentary, Dangerous Days that will thoroughly explore the making of the film and its evolution over time. After all, this is a box-office disaster we’re talking about. Blade Runner was not well received during its theatrical run, and the fame it’s earned has come over time on video and DVD.

The “Final Set” will come in a Deckard style briefcase for DVD and both high definition formats. Alternate, less extensive sets will be available on DVD in both two-disc (which includes the “Final Cut” of the film and Dangerous Days) and four-disc (which also includes the other versions of the film except for the rare workprint) options. But let’s be honest now, it’s the Ultimate Briefcase set that we all want, isn’t it?

Unfortunately this set isn’t coming in October as originally hinted. Instead Warner Brothers has solidified on a December 18th release date.

More details as we get them, but this is rapidly becoming the release of the year. For now, take a look at a spread out version of the collector’s case:
