Retail chain GameStop is looking to get in on this new-fangled digital distribution business. Today they appointed Chris Petrovic to the newly created position of General Manager, Digital Media.

"As the digital world of gaming and entertainment evolves, GameStop is well positioned to do what it does best – help create markets. This includes identifying and effectively participating in emerging trends in casual, browser and mobile gaming," said Dan DeMatteo, GameStop CEO. "While we are currently one of the leaders in the online PC game retail space through our recently relaunched GameStop Casual Digital Store, we are also committed to supporting our unique and vast footprint of brick and mortar stores and knowledgeable associates with a smart digital business platform."

In an interview last September, DeMatteo said that "the network won't be in place to do digital distribution of full games until 2020 to 2025." At least one analyst estimated that digital games sales would top $1 billion this year, however. Even if DeMatteo doesn't think retail stores will be supplanted by online services like Steam in the near future, today's appointment shows that he at least realizes there's money to be made there in the mean time.
