New Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Puts The Webslinger Up Against Electro In Times Square

As I write this, thousands of people are crowded at Times Square in New York City waiting for the ball to drop and usher in 2014. The annual tradition has been going on for nearly a full century - the first ball drop held in 1907 - but this year the event has a surprise guest. In promotion of next summer's blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2, director Marc Webb and the webslinger himself (Andrew Garfield under the mask) appeared on stage during the celebration to ring in the new year and further connect the superhero and his home town. The biggest part of Spider-Man's presence, however, was the unveiling of a special trailer edited for the event, and now that trailer has found its way online.

Remember earlier this month when a viral site for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - called ElectroArrives.com - launched and featured a countdown leading to New Year's Eve? Well, now that URL has been changed to EnemiesUnite.com and has hosted the brand new footage. To access the video on the site, just click the red button to the right of Harry Osborn's (Dane DeHaan) left hand. It's worth noting that a new countdown clock has launched, right now sitting at about 32 and a half days, and the link sits at the top of a list-like column. Perhaps this will be the home of many new special reveals?

The new URL is also very interesting. Earlier this month Sony Pictures officially announced that following The Amazing Spider-Man 3 they will be creating both Sinister Six and Venom movies, further expanding their own Spider-Man Cinematic Universe. Considering that the Sinister Six is all about enemies uniting, I think it's fair to assume that this is a reference to that project (read more about it HERE).

Finally, let's talk about the new trailer itself. While I don't think that the movie is going to have a scene set on New Years Eve, it does appear that one of the bigger action sequences will be set at Times Square. The film's main villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), grows more powerful when in direct contact with electricity, so where better to go than the electric billboard capital of America for power? It's Spider-Man's duty to stop him, but he also has to protect the cops that always protect themselves.

In addition to all of the actors mentioned above, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also stars Emma Stone, Sally Field, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper, Martin Sheen, Felicity Jones, B.J. Novak, Colm Feore, Sarah Gadon and Chris Zylka. Look for the film in theaters on May 2, 2014, and watch the two recently released theatrical and international trailers below.
