Back in June there was a pretty heavy rumor going around that Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be getting a remake, with the possibility of either Vanessa Hudgens playing the role or Sarah Michelle Gellar bringing the character back. The rumor was squashed fairly quickly, with Hudgens denying ever hearing about the part and Gellar saying that she is not involved, and we haven't heard anything since. But that doesn't mean that folks haven't been hard at work trying to get it happening.

Atlas Entertainment sent out a press release today announcing that not only will the franchise be rebooted, but that producers have already been lined up and a writer has been hired to script the project. According to the release, Charles Roven and Steve Alexander of Atlas will produce movie with Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and first-timer Whit Anderson will be taking care of the screenplay. From the release:
"Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy,” said Roven. “There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen. We’re thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."

You may notice the lack of a certain name up there - Joss Whedon. Not even mentioned passing, it seems as though the franchise creator will not be involved with the project, likely because he's too busy with Marvel's The Avengers. While I can't say that I've ever really watched the show, I know a couple of people who will likely spit venom when they hear this news. How about it, Buffy fans? Are you willing to see a reboot of the franchise just to get more Buffy, or does the Joss-lessness of it all insult you to your fanboy core? Leave you thoughts in the comments section.
