Elysium Will Hit Blu-ray And DVD Just Before The Holidays
There were a flurry of futuristic action films that came out in the past year or so and each of them seemed to have a big star attached. The most recent of these was Elysium, a decently big budget adventure story starring Matt Damon that was brought to audiences by District 9 director Neill Blomkamp. If you missed the movie in theaters, you’ll be able to catch it when it hits Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on December 17.
The science fiction narrative is set in the future, where the very wealthy and the very poor are completely polarized—a plot structure we’ve seen in movies like In Time and Total Recall. In Blomkamp’s film, what is desperately setting the two worlds apart is access to medical care. After a bad accident, a man named Max desperately wants to change the status quo and embarks on a dangerous mission (featuring sweet robotic suits) in order to bring equality to the people on the poverty-filled Earth and to change the structure of the wealthy space community Elysium forever.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is putting together the sets and the outlet has decided to put out different bonus features for the Blu-ray and DVD releases of the movie—an idea that has become a trend lately with certain companies but should be a little annoying for buyers. The lion's share of the extras will go to the Blu-ray, including a few behind-the-scenes featurettes and one extended scene. However, if you do opt to purchase a DVD copy, it will come with a couple of extras, including a segment following the actors in the film and a segment about the way that the space community Elysium was put together in the film.
When it hit theaters, Elysium was a modest box office success but failed to really wow audiences in the U.S. So, if you are a fan of Blomkamp but the Elysium release isn’t particularly piquing your interest, the director already has another science fiction project in the works and that one, Chappie, is looking like it will get a 2015 release date. As far as Elysium goes, the set is a little expensive if you are looking at the list price, which runs right around $40 bucks for both the Blu-ray and DVD. Luckily, you can pre-order the film on Amazon for much cheaper. Before you decide, you can take a look at the full list of extras, below.
