This December The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is primed to dominate the box office, and—like The Lord of the Rings trilogy that came before it—should prove a heavy-hitter in the crowded field of features questing for Oscar acclaim. Already, the sprawling epic has scared Tom Hooper's ambitious adaptation of the Broadway musical Les Mis out of its competing release date, chasing it to the end of December. And though still months away from its release, Warner Bros. is keeping fans pumped with a seemingly endless barrage of sneak peaks at the much-anticipated first entry of this sure-to-score prequel film series.

The latest release in their powerful marketing campaign is a new poster that is sure to be the most iconic of all the film's flood of promo pics. Check it out below thanks to the feature's Facebook page:

Adapted from J.R.R. Tolkein's beloved fantasy novel The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will center on the incredible adventure of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit whose idyllic life among his fellow Halflings is thrown into spin when the great and wandering wizard Gandalf charges him to aid a band of warrior dwarves in robbing a vicious dragon who lives deep within a far away mountain. Though it's unlike a hobbit to travel so far from home, Bilbo journeys forth into a world unknown with a grand destiny before him.

Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, who above brandishes his legendary blade Sting, heads a cast that includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield, and many, many more!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14th.
