If you haven’t seen The Dark Knight Rises I highly recommend at this time that you stay far, far away from this article. In fact, close it down right now, head to your local theater, see the movie, and then come back here. Then you can enjoy all of the spoilery goodness that lies beneath.

Everybody in the world who saw The Dark Knight Rises has exactly one big question on their mind: what is going to happen with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the future of the Batman franchise? There are some that have speculated that he will come back as a new version of Batman, others have said that he will get a solo film as Robin, and still others say that it’s not meant to be followed up on and is simply the conclusion to the trilogy. Well, now we can hear what the star’s take on it was.

Gordon-Levitt was on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and risking spoiling The Dark Knight Rises for his audience, the host asked the actor point blank about what’s going on with the future of the franchise. After saying that he has absolutely no idea and/or control over the situation, he then pitched an idea that suggests that that the ending wasn’t meant to be a set-up at all. You can watch the video below and the full comment will be in quotes underneath.

“I honestly don’t know. This is the truth: I don’t think it’s necessarily a set-up. I think it is a great ending for that trilogy. Even if you go back to Batman Begins he’s talking about how Batman is more than a man, it’s a symbol. And a hero can be anybody and we all have heroes inside of us, and that’s a theme that runs throughout the entire trilogy.

Grim as that sounds, it should also be pointed out that that statement was made after Gordon-Levitt said that he has no idea what’s going to happen with the future of the franchise. Here’s hoping that enough people over at Warner Bros. say yes to the idea of extending the franchise.
