When George Lucas revisited Star Wars and recast actors in rubber suits with complete CGI fabrication, many people called it sacrilege. And as co-creator Peter Laird considers revisiting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise with another live-action project, he'll be attempting the same feat-- without the massive fan backlash, of course.

Speaking with MTV, Laird confirmed the rumor that there are plans for a live-action Turtles movie, but not quite like the original series from the early '90s. "As it stands now, there is no intention of doing another live-action film like the first three, with actors and stuntmen in actual Turtle suits, contrary to what was said by Kevin. We have pretty much decided that the next “TMNT” movie should be what we’ve been calling a “hybrid” — that is to say, live-action humans and sets combined with very realistic CGI Turtles (and possibly some other CGI characters)."

Laird was vague when pressed for pretty much any other details, but confirmed that two original human actors from the early movies, Elias Koteas as Casey and Judith Hoag as April, probably won't return. "I think they might be a little too old to play these characters now (even if they wanted to, and I have no idea if they would). However, I think Chris Evans and Sarah Michelle Gellar did wonderful work voicing the Casey and April characters in the recent CGI TMNT movie, and I think it would be really cool if we could get them to reprise those roles."

Taking yet another page from the Lucas playbook, Laird also said he'd like to go back and digitally "tweak" the first Turtles films, removing goofs and improving anything that couldn't be done by CGI technology at the time. As I see it, he's playing with fire here, tangling with a franchise that remains beloved and potentially embarking on a wrongheaded CGI limb. The MTV interview is extensive, which indicates how serious Laird is about the plan. Whether his ideas are entirely wrongheaded, though, remains to be seen.
