Is Anya Taylor-Joy Playing Magik In New Mutants? Here’s What The Actress Says

Magik New Mutants

While the future of the X-Men franchise is a little unclear, it's possible that much of it will rest in the hands of the New Mutants. While we don't know much about the upcoming film, we've heard rumors about some of the actors that will be attached to it, and now one of them is speaking out. The Witch's Anya Taylor-Joy isn't saying anything about being cast in the film, or even having had conversations about it per se, however, it does sound like if she's on the shortlist, she's interested in the job.

I think the world is really fascinating. I'd love to be a part of it. It would be wonderful. I guess when they make decisions the world will know.

The rumor hit several months ago that three of the mutant characters planned for the upcoming New Mutants had already been found. The list included Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, and Alexandra Shipp reprising her role as Storm from X-Men: Apocalypse. While the studio has denied that casting decisions have been made, the rumors will likely persist until we hear anything different from Fox.

If we want to read the statement to IGN a particular way, we could make an argument that this at least confirms that Anya Taylor-Joy has at least spoken to the studio about the role. Certainly, regardless of how much a studio may want to hire an actor, they don't "make decisions" like that without including the person in question. If she feels that they might make the decision to cast her, it would be because sh's been given an impression that it could happen. When Maisie Williams was asked about the same report, she specifically said, that she couldn't say much, which does certainly imply that she'd had conversations about playing a part in New Mutants, so it appears the initial report was at least partially on the money.

In the comics that New Mutants will be based on, Magik is Illyana Rasputin, a teleporter, and sorceress, who is also the younger sister of the mutant Colossus. Regardless of who plays the part, the character is a very likely choice for the film. Magik has been part of the New Mutants in the comics and was also one of the characters that screenwriter Josh Boone teased fans with when he put several comic images up on his Instagram page. Wolfsbane, the character allegedly being played by Maisie Williams was also one of those, lending credence to the idea that character will be in the film, again, regardless of who actually ends up playing the part.
