Mel Gibson Unleashes An Army Of Super Soldiers In New Machete Kills Red Band Trailer

Robert Rodriguez has spent a significant amount of time in his career making children's movies, both building the Spy Kids franchise and making titles like Shorts and The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, but one must never forget the filmmaker's love of ridiculous violence. As though he's attempting to make up for his time spent appealing to the G-rated audience, Rodriguez's more adult-oriented material tends to go a little bit overboard, spilling gallons and gallons of fake blood in movies like Planet Terror, Sin City, or From Dusk Till Dawn. And as you can see in the above red band trailer for the upcoming Machete Kills, which comes to us via IGN, that pattern isn't changing with the director's latest work.

A sequel to Rodriguez's 2010 film and based on a screenplay written by newcomer Kyle Ward, the new movie finds the titular hero (Danny Trejo) called upon by the President of the United States (Carlos Estevez a.k.a. Charlie Sheen) to help in a mission that will prevent a madman arms dealer down in Mexico (Mel Gibson) from launching a deadly missile into space. But before he can face off against the big boss he must first go through his team of professional assassins, all of whom are sent to take the hero down. Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez will reprise their roles from the first movie, while other new additions include Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr,, Demian Bichir, Lady Gaga, Alexa Vega and William Sadler.

While this new trailer does do a solid job of showing off the ensemble cast, the real showcase here is the variety of ways that Machete disposes of his enemies and the ridiculous weapons that are used. The knife with the eviscerating side blades is quite nasty, and it's funny to see Rodriguez bring back the penis gun from both Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. And how many trailers have you seen that have two different ways in which a person is dragged into a spinning set of helicopter blades? The series really does seem to have a thing for using intestines for something other than their biological use, as evidenced by this clip from Machete where the lead uses some organs as a bungee cord.

Much like both the original Grindhouse "fake" trailer and the first movie, evidence suggests that Machete Kills will be quite a bloodbath and will be as over-the-top as it possibly can be. You'll be able to see it for yourself when the movie hits theaters on October 11th.
