Bill Pullman To Play The President In NBC Comedy Pilot 1600 Penn
The last time some of us saw Bill Pullman on TV, he was creeping us out as the child-killing Oswald Danes in Starz’ Torchwood: Miracle Day. But before that, he was associated with a number of memorable roles, including Lone Starr, the hero in Mel Brooks’ Star Wars spoof Spaceballs, or Walter, Meg Ryan’s nice-guy fiance in Sleepless in Seattle. Musical fans like myself likely appreciated his participation in Disney’s Newsies. And then, of course, there’s Independence Day, in which he played the president and former fighter pilot, who helped battle the invading aliens. It looks like he may be playing yet another presidential role, this time in a TV series.
Just a little while ago, we shared the news that Brittany Snow was joining NBC comedy pilot 1600 Penn. Created by Josh Gad, Jon Lovett and Jason Winer, the project follows a dysfunctional family living in the White House. Deadline now reports that Bill Pullman has also joined the cast of the pilot, playing President Gilchrist. Coincidentally, the character also has a military background as he’s a former marine. Pullman and Snow join Josh Gad, who in addition to co-creating the pilot, is also set to star.
Given the fairly disturbing nature of his role in the last season of Torchwood, it would be nice to see Pullman in a lighter role. We’ll have to see if this one makes it to series.
