George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series, which begins with Game of Thrones, is like Lord of the Rings if Gandalf made sexy time with the fine ladies of the Rohirrim. In other words, it’s a little more adult in tone. It’s also epically long in telling the tale of the impending winter, and the stories of a plethora of unique characters. The story of the inhabitants of Winterfell is laboriously long, detailed, and endlessly fascinating. So HBO is the perfect spot for the books to be adapted to film.
Game of Thrones will be allowed to spread it’s narrative out to ensure both Tyrion Lannister and Eddard Stark both get the breadth of their stories told; along with the myriad other characters who populate the world. I don’t know how I’d feel if those at The Wall got the short shrift due to time constraints in a major film release version. This way we’ll get to see Jonathan Snow, as well as the incestual Jaime Lannister. In recent weeks we’ve been getting our first tastes of what the HBO series will bring to the table, and while I’ve remained skeptical that it could be done justice, I have to admit what’s been shown so far is promising. Images of Peter Dinklage as Tyrion are pure perfection. Now we have the second trailer for the series from HBO, giving us a clearer look at what this fantasy epic is all about.
You can watch the trailer for yourself below. Then marvel at how this is shaping up to be to television fantasy what Lord of the Rings was to film.
