TV Recap: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 14 Results The downside to Napoleon and Tabitha serving as guest judges last night meant we were denied the pleasure of getting to see one of their fantastic hip hop routines performed by the contestants. On the bright side, we did get a really cool Broadway-style group performance at the start of tonight’s results episode courtesy of Tyce Diorio. Am I the only one who hears “Tasty Oreo” when Cat pronounces Diorio’s name? Maybe it’s the accent. Anyway…

Tonight’s performances included a re-appearance from Robert Moraine, the popper who auditioned this season but left during the Vegas rounds. I love that they brought him on as a performer. Nigel gave him a hard time for “chickening out” of the auditions but it looks like he’ll be back for a “battle” during the finale. Thanks Cat for setting that up. One Republic also performed. I actually liked the song and would love to see it used in one of the dances in the future.

Once again, tonight’s bottom three wasn’t a surprise. Katee/Joshua and Kherington/Twitch appear to be the frontrunners of this season with Chelsie and Mark quickly ascending the popularity latter. Those three couples were all safe. Here’s the breakdown:

Katee and Joshua – SAFE
Kherington and Twitch – SAFE
Kourtni and Matt – BOTTOM 3 - ELIMINATED
Courtney and Gev – BOTTOM 3
Chelsie and Mark – SAFE
Comfort and Thayne – BOTTOM 3
Jessica and Will - SAFE

Solos: Kourtni once again showed off her contemporary abilities with her dance. Matt’s solo was actually really good with lots of leaps and spins. Courtney’s solo was strong and I’m having a hard time deciding whether hers was better than other-Kourtni’s. Gev’s solo was great. He flipped and flew across the stage. Comfort, who was a “ballroom queen” last night, brought the hip hop back to the stage with as much energy as we saw with Gev. Thayne’s solo was good but I’m not sure it was good enough and honestly, if I had to choose, he’d be the one to go of the guys. As for the girls, there are two contemporary dancers in the bottom three females. One of them is sure to go.

Nigel said tonight’s decision was really tough and they were not unanimous with their choices. Comfort apparently did not have his vote based on her weaker solo and Kourtni ended up getting eliminated. Shortly after, Matt got cut because, according to Nigel, he started out good and stayed there. His lack of growth is what caused them to cut him.

I have to wonder if the judges cut Matt after deciding to cut Kourtni, not wanting to force Comfort to have to start all over with a new partner. I figure the decision to split up couples has to factor in to their decision at least a little. Either way, while I’m disappointed that Kourtni is gone as she was one of my favorites during the audition rounds, I’m not all that surprised. She and Matt both danced well each week but they weren’t anything spectacular. I was waiting for them to really bring something amazing to the stage and it just didn’t happen.

What did you think of tonight’s results? Who would you have preferred to be eliminated?

I think Comfort and Thayne should have left. I liked Matt's solo better than Thayne's and I think the judge's are cutting Comfort too much slack ...

  1. Don Says:

I have really mixed feelings about Comfort this week. I thought her solo just sucked, but I'm impressed with her ability to learn other dance styles and perform them so well. I'm sure they were judging her more for her couples work and her improvement than they were for her solo.

There's no doubt that Kourtni and Matt are both talented dancers, but I have to agree with the judges that they haven't showed much growth since their first appearance together. I've never found them particularly exciting to watch.

I liked Thayne's solo better than Matt's. I just think Thayne is more interesting to watch.
