Wow, I’m a bit floored by one of tonight’s eliminations. I guess with just eight contestants left, it’s getting harder to predict which two America will cast the fewest votes for but I have to agree with Nigel about the female contestant eliminated tonight. America got it wrong.

The episode started with a Mia Michaels’ Broadway routine to A Chorus Line’s “One.” As entertaining and well choreographed as the routine was, it was hard to put that up against some of the routines we saw later on in tonight’s 100th episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Hitting the 100 mark is a pretty big milestone for a TV show so it was appropriate that tonight, in honor of the occasion, they brought back some of the dancers from previous seasons to revive a few classic routines.

Hok and Jaimie took the stage to dance Wade Robson’s “Humming bird and the flower” dance. We also got to see Heidi and Travis reunite on stage to perform Mia Michaels’ “Bench Routine,” which earned her one of her Emmy’s for choreography. Those two performances, added to the routine that included a hefty collection of SYTYCD vets did well to emphasize just how fantastic this show is.

Among the rest of the filler, Katie Holmes performed her much-anticipated Broadway routine in an effort to promote the Dizzy Feet Foundation charity that she’s a part of. Lip-syncing aside (and I have a sneaking suspicion that it was pre-taped), I think she held her own pretty well among the seasoned male dancers that strutted around her and hopefully the performance will help promote the cause. Speaking of causes, Nigel announced that they received a number of calls, including one from breast cancer survivor Olivia Newton John commending them on the routine Tyce Dioreo choreographed for Melissa and Ade.

That brings us to the results. Melissa and Ade were in the bottom two last week but this week, they sailed through to the next round. Of the girls, Kayla and Janette were in the bottom two and of the guys, Jason and Brandon were also both in danger of elimination. That left Janine, Melissa, Ade and Evan to breath a sigh of relief and look forward to another week of competing.

As for Melissa and Ade’s safety, I definitely think the “This Woman’s Work” dance did a fair part to ensure their safety. It’s also probable that they were going to get a few more votes this week after coming close to elimination last week. All the same, as moved as I was by the dance they performed last night and as happy as I am to see both of them safe, I kind of wish that dance hadn’t been included in the competition. It might have been better if it had been feature during a results show when neither dancer stood anything to gain from performing the piece. That said, major kudos to Tyce for putting the piece together (and making me cry) and to Melissa and Ade for doing it justice.

Finally, the results were in and I was genuinely surprised that it was Janette that was eliminated and not Kayla. Kayla’s a fine dancer but Janette was my pick to win or at the very least, win out among the girls. I can’t say I’d been rooting for her from the beginning but over the last few weeks she’s clearly stood out as being a top-notch performer. I’m disappointed that she’s out of the running. As for Jason, while he’s a very good dancer, I can’t say that I was completely won over by him so his elimination was much easier to take, especially because Brandon is fantastic and deserves to go on to next week.

How did you feel about tonight’s results? Do you think Melissa and Ade benefited too much from Tyce’s routine or did they deserve another chance? Are you as disappointed as I am that Janette is gone or are you too relieved to see Kayla in the running to care?
