Nothing defined the ‘80s sitcom more than “Silver Spoons,” the rags to riches story of a kid who loses his mom and winds up with his millionaire dad who is more of a child at heart than he is. No matter how old I get, I won’t forget the moment of the pilot episode where young Ricky Stratton first meets his father, whose wealth is evident by the fact that he has a Pac-Man machine in his ample living room. The shock of Edward Stratton discovering the strange boy is communicated by the death sound effects of the video game. Laughter, of course, ensues.
Season one of “Silver Spoons” is headed for DVD on June 19th, just a few months shy of the show’s 25th anniversary. It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since little Ricky Schroder became a teenage heartthrob as a live action Richie Rich, resulting in awards and a dedicated fanbase. Other stars of “Silver Spoons” include Joel Higgins (as Edward Stratton) and Erin Gray. Later seasons would see the introduction of a young Alfonso Ribiero (“Fresh Prince of Bel Air”).
