The ambitious new Planet of the Apes game, Last Frontier, finally has a launch date on the PlayStation 4. Whether you side with the apes or the humans, you'll be able to start exploring the entire adventure in just a few short weeks. Get ready to play on Nov. 21.
Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is unique for several reasons. For starters, it's coming to us from The Imaginarium, the production house set up by Andy Serkis. And in case you're having trouble putting a face to the name, that's because the guy's best roles have included Caesar from the Planet of the Apes series and Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. He was also the titular primate in King Kong.
While Serkis himself has starred in several video games, this is going to be The Imaginarium's first major console release. Set to arrive on Nov. 21, this new Planet of the Apes experience is an adventure game driven by player choice. Based on what we've seen and heard so far, gameplay won't be too far removed from what we've seen with the Telltale games these past several years.
What really sets this project apart, though, is that it is one of the PlayStation's new PlayLink titles, which means up to four players will be experiencing the game together.
When things set off, you'll play as both the humans and the apes. We suppose the idea here is that, since both sides are sympathetic, players will want to play through the game at least a couple of times to get a fuller picture of the narrative. There are also multiple endings that, again, will reward repeat playthroughs.
The game is set between Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the most recent War for the Planet of the Apes. In other words, tensions are high as the apes and the humans struggle to find their own place in this world. Again, that's one of the big draws of the film series; neither side is just straight-up bad. Even if the humans are the clear aggressors, they're given believable reasons to be terrified of the apes.
Players will have the opportunity to make multiple choices for both the humans and apes as the story of Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier unfolds. However, what sets this title apart from your average adventure game is that fact that multiple people can play, and make decisions. This means the story won't necessarily take the path every player expects, leading to interesting combinations of events, and probably more than a few arguments among friends. In a press release from The Imaginarium, they state that players will "explore and struggle with each choice collectively." So, yeah, that sounds pretty rad.
This latest adventure in the Apes universe cam be played with a standard controller or with smart devices. When it launches on Nov. 21, you can purchase it for $19.99.
