Andrea Berloff Hired To Write N.W.A. Biopic Straight Outta Compton

The seminal 80s rap group N.W.A. was just back in the spotlight at the Tribeca Film Festival last week, where former member Ice Cube was presenting his documentary Straight Outta L.A., about the parallel paths of the group and the local football team the Oakland Raiders. And while a berth at Tribeca isn't exactly enough to catapult a long-defuct group into the zeitgeist, it might have been enough to get the gears moving on Straight Outta Compton, a biopic about N.W.A. that just hired a screenwriter.

THR reports that the lucky writer is Andrea Berloff, whose only other feature writing credit is Oliver Stone's World Trade Center. Don't ask me how that single credential led into this job, or how a white woman is expected to tackle the very proudly black, very overwhelmingly male N.W.A., a group frequently accused of promoting misogyny and anti-Semitism. Apparently she's a woman who enjoys a good challenge.
