August Rush-ed

Last May, Warner Brothers snatched up rights to Kirsten Sheriden’s fantasy love story, August Rush and production is finally about to begin after a six month delay. With filming set for February 13th in New York, Production Weekly might have the final cast confirmed.

Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) and Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland) have long been attached to this project. According to PW, Keri Russell and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, both currently working on Mission: Impossible 3 have signed on to the movie as well. I’m not happy about this but I bode no ill will to these actors. However, Liv Tyler has long been rumored to be in negotiations for Russell’s role and I hate to miss a chance to gaze upon her.

The premise of August Rush is that musical prodigies, Louis and Lyla (Rhys-Meyers and Russell), spend one last night together before they part for ten years. The encounter produces a child, August (Highmore), and the movie focuses on the young boy, and his magical quest to unite his family. A mysterious wizard played by Williams aids August on his journey. I’m holding onto hope that this will be one of Williams’s subdued performances because this movie sounds interesting if handled the right way.

No word yet on a possible release date although late 2006 is to be expected.
