DVD Blend - 08/02/05

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren't. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to amazon.com and youíll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

Guess Who

Proving that there’s really nothing worth looking at this week, I guess I’ll highlight this remake of Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner. Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher swap the roles originally made famous by Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy, as Ashton’s white boy dates Bernie’s black daughter. You probably didn’t need those colors spelled out for you, but I’ve got to do something to fill space here. Maybe I could point out how Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher have had some decent roles in other movies, like Ocean’s Eleven and Butterfly Effect. Now imagine them in the tension of the Poitier/Tracy film, but with the gags of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and you’re close to this week’s highlight.

Might be a good week to catch up on your laundry.

Other titles released this week that might be worth your time:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Alexander - 2 Disc Director’s Cut - Alexander wasn’t exactly worth a look in theaters, so I’m not going out of my way to promote this director’s cut. Oliver Stone has theoretically removed eighteen minutes of gay footage, and added ten minutes of new stuff in. Could that make it better? Only if the ten minutes feature Angelina Jolie on a stripper’s pole.Row 1 - Cell 2 Downfall - I think I’ll avoid any obvious jokes regarding a German film about the final days of Hitler and just say the film has actually achieved quite a bit of critical success. Since its theatrical run was predominantly small art-houses, the film is really getting its big exposure on DVD - good for me since it finally gives me a chance to catch it.
Row 2 - Cell 0
Row 3 - Cell 0 Dukes of Hazzard Season 4 - Looks like them Duke boys are showin’ up just in time for the theatrical remake. One last chance to revel in the days of Tom Wopat and John Schneider before those interlopers take over, and I don’t mean Vance and Coy in Season 5’s release. More importantly, this has the real stars of “Hazzard” - James Best as Roscoe and Flash!Row 3 - Cell 2 Ghostbusters I and II - I’d be pushing this more if it wasn’t almost exactly the same as the two discs available separately that are already out there. The only real difference is the inclusion of several episodes of “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon on the Ghostbusters II disc. If you already have the others pass this one by and wait for the eventual “Real Ghostbusters” season by season releases.
