Enchanted Director Back To Fairy Tale Land For Thumb

Just because the main character would be tiny, doesn’t mean this story can’t be brought to the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and Red Wagon have recruited Kevin Lima to direct the film version of Tom Thumb, Thumb. This won’t be much of a stretch for Lima because the last film he directed was the fairytale-themed hit Enchanted.

Thumb will be shot in live action, but Tom may be depicted using CGI. This decision makes sense considering Tom is a rather tiny character. According to the English folklore, which dates all the way back to the 1500s, a childless couple takes in a beggar who is actually the magician Merlin. The couple tells this beggar of their hopes to have a child even if he was no bigger than a thumb. Well, that is most certainly what they got. But size could never stop Tom from getting into trouble. After a series of unusual events, Tom somehow winds up in Arthur’s court where he is made an honorary knight.

This isn’t the first time this small tale was stretched to feature length. MGM released a live-action musical in 1958 and BBC a darker animated version in 1993 among others. This time, the production team will include Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon, Courtenay Valenti and Jesse Ehrman of Warner Bros., as well as Chris Chase in the executive producer position. It looks as though this comedy-adventure could be fast-tracked by the studio, so we may be getting more details on the film sooner than you think.
