It was a huge news back in September 2012 when it was announced that director Matt Reeves would be replacing Rupert Wyatt at the helm of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and today we have news that's just as big - if not bigger. Deadline is reporting that 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment have already struck up a deal with Reeves that will see the director come back to helm the third installment of the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise.
In addition to being attached to direct, Reeves is also negotiating to write the screenplay alongside Mark Bomback, who is one of the credited writers on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The studio is hoping that Reeves will be able to start working on the third movie as soon as the second one is finished. Can you tell the franchise is a bit of a priority at Fox?
This move could be seen as very good news for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The film isn't going to be out until July, but already the studio is trying to wrap him up for a third movie. This may be a sign that they are very happy with what they have seen from the sequel so far. That said, it's also possible that they are looking to avoid the situation that happened with Wyatt after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, when the director bailed on the follow-up due to scheduling concerns and forced the studio to quickly hunt for a replacement. It seems like Fox wants these movies coming out as fast as they possibly can, and they don't need another director hunt getting in their way.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be out in theaters on July 11th, and stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smith-Mcphee, Enrique Muriciano, and Kirk Acevedo. The film is set a few years after the last film and centers on a small group of humans who have survived the global plague and are continually hunted by Caesar (Serkis) and his army of apes.
