I remember when the posters first came out for The Expendables boasting names like Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Couture, Austin, Crews, Rourke, Willis. It seemed a dizzying dream to have an action movie so overstuffed with unapologetically burly and badass stars. And the resulting movie was as insane as it was enjoyable. Then came news of Expendables 2 and promises of even more macho matinee idols (Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris) being added to the cast. Now, with this supped up testosterone fest set to hit theaters Friday, the franchise's producer Avi Lerner shared who he has in mind for cast expansion in what's still only a theoretical The Expendables 3.

Speaking with Total Film, Lerner was quick to namedrop about the third entry, telling the agog reporter,
"We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].”

It seems a given that Cage and Snipes would sign on to The Expendables 3, as both could use the paychecks and would likely be amped to face-off against/chew the scenery with so many of their action hero peers. However, I'm less certain Eastwood would be as game to return to his action roots, having firmly moved behind the scenes, and surfacing only to perform in moody dramas. As for Ford, he is still doing the occasional action-adventure film (2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, 2011's Cowboys & Aliens) and so seems a possible get. However, if The Expendables 3 plans to wait for Snipes, the film won't go into production until after his release from a Pennsylvania federal prison on July 19th, 2013. So expect plenty of possible names to be thrown out in the meantime.

And there's one final enticing detail about Expendables 3, but be warned this one is a major spoiler for The Expendables 2….Ready? Okay, during the interview, Van Damme himself wandered over and warmly said, “Thank you for everything Avi, and thank you for Expendables 3!” Of course this suggests Van Damme could reprise his role for the next film, but Lerner's response offers not only a spoiler for 2 but also an awesomely '80s plot device reminiscent of Van Damme's Double Impact as he chuckled in return, "We can bring in your twin brother!” Maybe this is a joke, but with Lerner bringing so much over-the-top action back to theaters, I'm not going to count the idea of (evil) Van Damme twin out just yet.
