Richard Kelly Goes South

My hopes for Richard Kelly's next flick dimmed a bit after I'd seen the Director's Cut of Donnie Darko. It was almost as if he never really quite understood what it was about his original film that was so great in the first place. Was it just an accident? A fluke? Kelly will try to dodge the sophomore slump next year with his second film Southland Tales.

Though I've heard the name kicking around for awhile, and though we know the cast has been filled out by "The Rock", Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean William Scott, and even Amy Poehler… there hasn't been much clear information on exactly what this movie is supposed to be about. Or maybe there has been, and I haven't seen it. Drop me an email if so.

To the point, Twitchfilm.net has snagged a review of the Southland Tales script that gives us a pretty good picture of what exactly we can expect from the film. Twitch describes it this way: "Set in an alternate reality: (Los Angeles July 2008) not unlike the reality in Philip K Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle," internet is outlawed and regulated, and the army patrol the streets and watch over the sea, ohh and there's also a doomsday machine involved - It's the story of Boxer a successful action movie star with amnesia, Krysta Now a porno star and an actors collective, The Lighthouse Gang... all these character's lives are thrown together by a kidnapping that goes horribly wrong... It also involves a conspiracy about making the entire world go mad... And ends with a hilarious 'race' riot..."

Alternate reality is good, hilarious race riot is… odd. Crash this is not. To read the full script review click on over to Twitch. Or if you want to be confused, take a look at the Southland Tales Official Site.
