The Spirit Gets New Life

Frank Miller’s actual directorial debut, The Spirit is really shaping up. Although primary cast members have been in place for some time, the one thing the title character was missing was a love interest. Frankly, you’d think Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson would be enough for one guy, but the two actresses are playing characters closer to femme fatales. Now The Spirit has found his love: actress Sarah Paulson (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip) will play Dr. Ellen Dolan, daughter to the police commissioner.

The movie, based on the classic Will Eisner comic character (which essentially is the great-grandfather to all other comics), stars Gabriel Macht as Denny Colt, aka “The Spirit,” a cop who returns from the dead to fight crime. His arch nemesis in the movie, the Octopus, is being played by Samuel L. Jackson, so the movie already has that going for it, as well as Mendes and Johansson playing vicious vixens. But Paulson is a good addition for a more heartstrong character.

Paulson isn’t the only addition to the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also joining the cast are Dan Lauria as Commissioner Dolan, Stana Katic as another rookie cop like Colt, Johnny Simmons as a younger version of Macht’s lead character, and Louis Lombardi as Phobos, one of the Octopus’s henchmen.
