The Spirt Patrols The City In His Teaser Trailer

We saw the teaser poster for Frank Miller’s take on Will Eisner’s The Spirit earlier today and now the teaser trailer has appeared online, courtesy of MTV Movies.

The trailer is exactly what I expected this to be. Make no mistake, this is Frank Miller’s approach to the classic character. You have a Sin City approach happening here, creating that feel of a comic book brought to life into a moving picture, with that little splash of color. Complete the picture by adding a voiceover narration about the city, and you’ve got the trailer.

I return to my theory from this morning – Miller is making the picture he wants to make. Don’t expect to see the character Will Eisner created being 100% true to Eisner’s vision in this movie. Instead expect a mesh of The Spirit with Miller’s own Sin City.

Of course, my (most likely unwelcome) question is, if Miller wanted to make another Sin City style movie, why didn’t he just move forward on Sin City 2 with (or without) Rodriguez. We know the cast is game to continue that story and it’s evident from this teaser that Miller is too. Why not continue the success of that story instead of altering Eisner’s creation into something a bit darker than most people associate it as being? Those who are aware of the character, that is. I still maintain The Spirit is going to have its work cut out for it attracting an audience, although perhaps a Sin City approach will help with that.

For all my complaints, I will say I love the use of the Untouchables theme music here. A really solid pick, albeit a surprising one. It almost seems like it would be easier to have gone with some of Sin City’s theme.
