In a huge week for impressive trailer releases, I'd argue that Pacific Rim was by far the most exciting, if only because the robots vs. monsters movie from Guillermo del Toro is a completely original idea. There was a lot to process in the trailer, from figuring out what these monsters are all about to getting glimpses inside the giant robots that humans use to fight them, and if you haven't quite figured it all out yet, I can't blame you. And luckily, Guillermo del Toro is here to help, with an honest-to-God commentary for the trailer. It's packed with information and extra details about the story, so check it out in the video below:

Del Toro is famously geek friendly, but I'm still impressed by just how much he's willing to reveal about the movie, to the point of promising we'll see more of things like the portal that brings the monsters-- a.k.a. Kaijus-- to the Earth to begin with. If you're not quite sure how the giant monsters actually work, del Toro has a really clear explanation of that, and how the two humans inside it manage to move it with perfect accuracy:

"The pilots wear suits that are neurally linking them," says del Toro. "They have a spinal clamp that links their spines. They have relay gel in their helmets that transmit their impulses to one another. They move in synchronicity. One is handling the neural network of the left side of the Jaeger, and the other is handling the neural network of the right side of the Jaeger. They are connected between them."

With del Toro's promise that this is trailer is like Howard's End compared to all the monster-slaying action of Pacific Rim the movie, it seems all the geek excitement over this is totally warranted. Pacific Rim comes to theaters July 12 next year, and you can click here to learn everything else we know about it.
