The Weekend Blend 2/25 – 2/27

2/25 – 2/27 New movies come out each weekend; come here to find out which werewolf/superhero movie will be your only viable option. Three new wide releases this weekend, while it’s a desert in the artsy fartsy districts. Keep reading to find out how you should spend your movie going weekend:

Man of the House

(Opens 2/25 on 2300+ screens.)

Tommy Lee Jones hangs out doing inappropriate things with young, hot, college cheerleaders in the comedy Man of the House. While the movie was no doubt a lot of fun for Tommy Lee Jones to make, it’s probably not going to be much fun to watch. There were no advance press screenings for it, which is usually a sure sign that the movie is horrible, the studio knows it, and they don’t want anyone to review it. No reviews is better than bad reviews, right? Still, it was filmed around my old haunts on the University of Texas campus in Austin. No, I wasn’t a student there, but a humble community college student can dream can’t he? I’m mildly interested in seeing it just for the Austin connection, but even ex-UT alums would be wise to avoid it.

Diary of a Mad Black Woman

(Opens 2/25 on 1300+ screens.)

Its movie posters have confused and bored you for months. Its trailer hasn’t been shown anywhere that I might have seen it. Diary of a Mad Black Woman trundles into theaters this weekend to entertain no one and offer nothing of interest. It’s the story of a black woman, who I guess gets mad. Leaves her husband, hangs out with a guy dressed up as a black granny. Sounds a lot like a dramatic version of Big Momma’s house. If the story of a rich black girl being beaten up by her husband and dumped in the ghetto for good times with drag queens appeals to you, then there’s probably a better way to get that fix than this. I’m sure Oprah has something to offer in the genre.

Cursed

(Opens 2/25 on 3000+ screens.)

This may be the worst movie-going weekend of the year. Stay home. If you insist on going out to see something new, I guess you can try Cursed. I saw a few places billing it as a horror/comedy, so you might be able to laugh at its clumsy attempts at humor if all else fails. Directed by Wes Craven and starring Christina Ricci and others like Michael Rosenbaum, Portia Di Rossi, Shannon Elizabeth and Joshua Jackson the movie at least has some names floating around in it. The concept is that of a brother and sister changed by an accident. One plot synopsis makes it sound like they have super powers, citing increased physical strength and a strange allure attracting those around them. Other descriptions talk a lot about werewolves. Whatever it is about, since the success of The Grudge, PG-13 movies have become the new hot thing, and Cursed will no doubt make a tidy sum of money. Contributing to that sum is better than sitting through the other weekend alternatives.
