The Weekend Blend Saw

It’s Halloween, and that means this weekend is all about blind musicians. Anyone have a good Ray Charles costume? Or maybe I could just go as a California Raisin. He sang that song… didn’t he? Hey I’m blind! Now give me some candy! We’ve got two major releases hitting theaters this weekend and one indie which I won’t mention since it isn’t opening in enough theaters for everyone to catch it. Listen up and guide your viewing habits from my pick.

Saw

The most anticipated horror release of this month is of course Saw. The concept is a killer and people are pretty hyped to see it. It’ll either disturb you for the rest of yoru natural life (and perhaps part of your unnatural) or it’ll fall apart under the weight of yet another overly complicated serial killer plot. But last week a lot of people already ran out and caught The Grudge, in fact it was number one. Saw may be good, but it’s unfortunantely now stuck in a crappier horror movie’s shadow. Even without The Grudge I’m not entirely sold. Sure it stars Carey Elwes and Danny “I’ve been 56 since Lethal Weapon 1” Glover, but the critical word on their acting in this is pretty mixed. You’ve got to be doing something pretty wrong as a director to get a totally crap performance out of the Dread Pirate Roberts. Steer clear of this horror movie and forget the whole Halloween thing. If you have to get scared, try bungie jumping, or pick up a copy of Pizza the Movie.

Ray - CB PICK!

Yeah, it isn’t exactly the best way to worship the devil, but Ray is by far the movie not to be missed this weekend. Jamie Foxx has already turned in one killer performance this year in Michael Mann’s fantastic Collateral opposite Tom Cruise, but by all accounts his turn as Ray Charles blows that completely away. Ray Charles isn’t around to give this his stamp of approval, but he was involved in the film before his death… I think they actually got it right. Best of all, they’re actually using his music, so while it may suck to watch Jamie Foxx spend a couple of hours doing the Ashlee Simpson lip synch, that’s a darn site better than listening to Foxx attempt to match up to the vocal chops of the real father of soul. Forget trick-or-treating, leave the razors out of your apples and make it a point not to miss Ray this weekend.
