Weekend Box Office

Jet Li does it again. Summer withdrawal has begun. The top ten movies in America, together, brought in less than $60 mill with none of them making over $10 mill. August’s one two punch (if you can even call it that) of Exorcist & AvP found themselves drop off the radar this week, last week’s Ben Kingsley led thriller barely broke the top twenty, and the Open Water phenomenon has apparently found itself in too deep.

All four of this week’s new releases didn’t bode well. With the winner of those being St. Mel’s production Paparazzi standing tall in the #4 slot. Granted, Labor Day weekend never pulls in the business Memorial Day weekend does, hell Memorial Day’s #2 brought in more money than all of Labor Day’s ten, so maybe next week we’ll see some double digits. Next week we got ourselves a video game sequel and a thriller from the same guy who thought of Phone Booth. Also in theatres next week, in limited release, look for the John C. Reilly fronted Criminal and George Lucas’s latest “Special Edition” THX 1138: The George Lucas Director’s Cut. None of them float my boat. I’m waiting for Saw (10/29), which has switched release dates again and has been bouncing around the October calendar like a ping pong ball. Anyways, I’ll shut up now. Here’s this week’s Top Ten...
