With the prominence of major adaptations like Transformers, G.I. Joe and last year's Power Rangers, we have seen a number of beloved properties from the 1980s and 1990s get transferred to the big screen in recent years. One of the next properties on deck for such a treatment is the long-awaited He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot. However, it seems like the project may have just experienced a setback, as Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer is no longer attached to helm the Sony project.
This news comes only a few months after the initial announcement that David S. Goyer would go behind the camera for the Masters of the Universe adaptation. The screenwriter turned in a draft of the adaptation that reportedly impressed the studio enough to convince it to let him take control of the project, but now it seems that scheduling conflicts with his upcoming miniseries Foundation will prevent him from doing so. Goyer remains attached to the Masters of the Universe film as an executive producer, as well as its screenwriter; he just won't be the one to oversee its production when the cameras finally start rolling.
As of right now, the Variety report confirming David S. Goyer's departure from the director's chair says that Sony is currently in the process of looking for other filmmakers to take his place. The process appears to still be in its earlier stages, which means it may be a while until the replacement is announced. Sony is also still in the process of finding actors for the project.
Even without David S. Goyer sitting down in the director's chair for this Masters of the Universe project, there's quite a bit to get excited about for this film. Goyer is arguably best known for his work on Man of Steel, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, as well as his upcoming Superman prequel series for the Syfy network, Krypton. Some of his most high-profile projects have involved reimagining classic heroes for the silver and small screen, so the potential of his take on He-Man, Battle Cat and the other citizens of Eternia is enticing, to say the least. Beyond that, knowing Sony's initial excitement about his first draft of the screenplay suggests a relatively significant degree of confidence in the overall strength of the story and the project as a whole.
Stay tuned for more updates related to Sony's Masters of the Universe movie as more details related to the project are made available. The adaptation of the beloved cartoon series is currently slated for release next year on December 18, 2019.
