Reality television has been the bread and butter for cable networks for well over a decade. Tons of celebs have had their hands in the pot, including the legendary singer Mariah Carey. After a one season (tumultuous) stint at American Idol, Carey launched her own series this past year on E!, titled Mariah's World. Although she refused to call it a reality show, Mariah's World followed Mariah's life as she prepared for her most recent tour and her wedding planning with ex-fiancee James Packer. Unfortunately, her fans will have to go back to life without her on the small screen, as E! has cancelled the series after its first season.
NBC Universal confirmed this move yesterday (via THR), while also celebrating how the first season was able to give viewers a more intimate look at Mariah Carey's life. Unfortunately, it looks like the series will not continue, which should not come to a surprise to anyone who had been following Mariah's World's ratings. While the series premiere started off with a pretty unbelievable 2.2 million viewers, viewership declined with every week, with only 0.51 million tuning into the season finale.
The news of Mariah's World's cancellation may also be influenced by some of the scandals that the singer has had over the course of the last year. Shortly after the docuseries (happy, Mariah?) premiered, Carey had a disastrous performance at ABC's New Years's Rockin' Eve, barely getting through her set, unable to even lip synch to the vocals that were in place for her during some songs. Since then, social media has been following her performances, and moments of awkwardness from her tour and Vegas residency have gone viral. She also filmed a cameo for Amy Poehler and Will Ferrel's The House, but her behavior onset was so bad that it was basically cut, and actors made the press rounds trashing her.
It's also unclear exactly what a second season of Mariah's World could be about. Since Season 1 was largely focused on her last tour, there would presumably be less action to shoot if had been renewed by E!. Although Carey has been getting more involved in the world of film lately, recently making her directorial debut with the Hallmark Channel movie A Christmas Melody. She also recently voiced the Mayor of Gotham in Matt Reeves' massively successful The Lego Batman Movie.
It should be interesting to see where Mariah Carey's career goes in the next year, considering how bumpy 2017 was. But in addition to the film and TV projects she's recently been working on, Carey did release a new single last year, titled "I Don't". She's also currently in residency in Las Vegas. So while Mariah's World may be over, you can still catch Mimi doing her thing.
