Melinda Banks (Jennifer Love Hewitt) possesses a gift that’s been handed down through generations by the women in her family: she can communicate with the dead. Well, ghosts at least-- spirits that cannot yet cross over into “the Light” and be at rest, because of a message or task that needs to happen among the living. Melina acts as a medium for these ghosts, helping them achieve peace. Only her husband Jim (David Conrad), her mother Delia (Camryn Manheim) and local professor Rick (Jay Mohr) know of her powers, and all become involved when a dark spirit in a black hat named Romano (John Walcutt) conspires against Melinda to bring spirits to the Dark Side.
At the end of the last season, a new Ghost Whisperer was introduced, a man whose appearance fulfilled a dark prophecy that threatens to give the Dark Side more power over the Light. In the final episode Melinda also had a near-death experience that revealed she may have a brother. In the third season Melinda has reason to believe that the spirits of the Dark Side will be coming after her, but that doesn’t stop her from continuing her work of helping spirits pass on to the light. An animated teaser at a Ghost Whisperer fan site indicates there may be plenty of darkness yet to come. Also, Wikipedia indicates that Melinda may be connecting with another member of her family in the new season.
It’s heartening to see that, even after Buffy and Wonderfalls and Joan of Arcadia bit the bullet, shows about competent young women with special powers still thrive on television. It surprised me when Ghost Whisperer did so well in its first seasons, given its somewhat-hokey premise, but it’s developed a loyal fan base-- just check out their elaborate MySpace-- who appreciate fantasy on television still. I’ve never watched the show, and don’t know that I’ll ever make myself stay in on Friday nights to see it, but it looks like Ghost Whisperer’s loyal fans have a lot to look forward to in the new season.
