It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia's Stars Want To Break A TV Record

The Gang It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia FXX

If it feels like It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia has been on television for a long time, that's because it has. The series will continue its long television run, as it has already been renewed for Seasons 13 and 14, and Charlie Day and the cast are hoping for more seasons after that so they can break a pretty big television record. Day explained that if the series were to be renewed for Season 15, it would earn a place in the TV history books:

You definitely get Season 13, which we're making right now, and Season 14, which we're contracted to do, and then beyond that, it'll be up to FX. But I think 15 is the record for a comedy, so I imagine we'll all want to hold the record for the longest-running comedy in America. 15 would be the record for the longest live-action comedy, so we'll probably try and break that record if we can.

As mentioned, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is currently renewed through Season 14. That season will tie the series with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which has held the record for longest-running live-action comedy sitcom since it went off the air in 1966. It's hilarious to think the same series that convinced a living acting legend like Danny DeVito to get naked and hide in a leather couch could hold such a prestigious honor, but also a reality that seems like it could actually happen.

The way Charlie Day told it to The Wrap, it sounds like the only thing that could keep a record-breaking Season 15 from happening is FX. As busy as he and the other members of the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia cast are at the present, Day appears to indicate that all of them are down for getting together to break that record should the network want them around longer. One would imagine FX won't be making any decisions regarding the series until it sees how Season 13 goes, and even then they might wait until Season 14 to make an official decision.

It's also worth mentioning that a lot can change in two seasons, and while the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia cast seems set on breaking that record now, they've all been about as busy as they've ever been in the show's history. Charlie Day has his film career, Glenn Howerton has his NBC series A.P. Bio, Kaitlin Olson has proved willing to explore outside projects, and Rob McElhenney has a few writing projects in the pipeline. Despite their protests otherwise, everyone's loaded schedule always means that the comedy could be just one scheduling conflict away from the series being too much to handle for the team.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia fans can worry about Season 15 in a couple of years. Until then, Season 13 is expected to air on FXX at some point before the end of 2018. For a list of other television shows with more concrete release dates, head on over to our summer premiere guide.
