Fox Cancels The O.C.

Fox has announced that the overly melodramatic teen soap ‘The O.C.’ has been cancelled. The decision comes as ratings have plummeted for the show at an alarming rate, and the recent departure of Mischa Barton probably didn’t help too much either. I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe viewers began to see the vapid nature of the show. A quality that can be done to great success, see ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ for example. It seems Josh Schwartz and the creative team couldn’t maintain whatever intangible quality captured millions of viewers at the show’s outset.

Fox says the current season will get it’s full run, with the finale airing on February 22nd. This is a better hand then Megan Mullally’s dismal talk show received, that was cancelled immediately.

”It has been an amazing experience and a great run,” ‘The O.C.’ creator Josh Schwartz said in a statement earlier this week,”For a certain audience, at a certain time, ‘The O.C.’ has meant something. For that we are grateful.”
