More Than Half Of Tablet Owners Use Them To Watch TV And Videos

Watching television on a smart phone can be kind of a hassle. First, the battery waste is pretty extreme and people often need their phones for other purposes, like actual phone use or e-mail use on the go. While 20% of people still watch some video content on their smartphones, the issues phones may have can hinder use in ways that are less of a problem for tablet users.

When the iPad exploded onto the scene just two short years ago, market penetration for tablet devices increased greatly, with older adults favoring the tablet and younger adults still using smartphones as the mobile technology device of their choice. The user population of tablets versus smartphones has not changed much in the last couple of years, but according to a new report from comScore, what tablets are currently being used for might be changing.

According to the report, despite the increase and relative availability of large television sets, tablets are increasingly becoming more popular as a way to watch TV programs. The study, which took a 3-month average of use ending in April, noted 53% of tablet users watched television or video media on the device at least once. Whether this viewing occurs during traveling, because certain content can be watched for free online, or for other reasons is not unknown, but I will say this: I would always, always choose to watch my big ass TV over using a tablet for television. Despite this, there are occasions having a tablet can prove useful for watching television. With more content going online, I can only see media use on tablets increasing in the future.
