Fox has found a co-star for Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg in the currently untitled detective comedy pilot from Mike Schur and Dan Goor. Tyler Perry’s Are We There Yet star Terry Crews has signed on to star opposite Samberg for the single-camera project.

Former NFL player turned actor Crews will be playing Sergeant Terry Jeffords, who is in charge of a detective quad situated in a precinct at the edge of New York City, where Samberg’s character is the lead detective. He’s described as a no-nonsense father-figure type. The comedy will follow the diverse group of police detectives who make up the squad.

Crews has been recurring on the HBO drama The Newsroom and also appeared on Everybody Hates Chris among other TV shows. He recently finished filming the Tyler Perry movie Single Mom’s Club and has the movies among his other film credits. He’s also set to appear in the new season of Arrested Development on Netflix, according to Deadline, which hits the streaming service in May. Word is he was much sought after this pilot season, choosing the Fox project from three offers.

The Fox comedy is being directed by the team behind the 21 Jump Street movie adaptation, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, so they bring some detective comedy experience to the table. The pair also co-executive produced on How I Met Your Mother ‘s first season. Mike Schur and Dan Goor have worked together very successfully on both Parks and Recreation, and The Office. Looks like Fox is assembling a pretty strong team for this one.
