Warner Bros. announced today that they’re throwing a key party at comic con. Those are their words, not mine, however before your mind starts drifting to things you’ve heard about the ‘70’s, this event is actually a fun, promotional strategy involving hotel room keys.

From bags and pins to posters and apparently, hotel keycards, Comic-Con is the place to be if you’re a geek with a flare for collecting things. Given how many people will be coming in from out of town to enjoy the convention, it’s no surprise that studios and networks might want to reach out to the local hotels with an event like this one.

Warner Bros. is set to promote upcoming TV series Alcatraz and Person of Interest, the DVD release of Smallville: The Complete Series, original new media series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, and video game The Lord of the Rings: War in the North with 40,000 Limited-Edition collectible hotel keycards, which will be made available to guests at 36 hotels in the San Diego area during Comic-Con 2011 next month.

Lost fans are likely to appreciate the Alcatraz and Person of Interest keycards. CBS’ Person of Interest stars Michael Emerson (Ben from Lost) and is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. Meanwhile, Fox’s Alcatraz is exec-produced by J.J. Abrams and stars Lost’s Jorge Garcia. As for the Smallville keycard, I’m not a huge fan of the series, however I still wouldn’t mind a keycard with Tom Welling’s face on it.
