Hidden Path Entertainment has the pleasure of announcing today that Defense Grid 2 has hit its Kickstarter goal of $250,000 and will be arriving sooner rather than later. The bonus goals won't be accomplished given that the game has less than 69 hours left of funding, but at least Defense Grid 2 is on the way.
In celebration of hitting the Kickstarter goal the team released a rather fun-loving Defense Grid 2 music video, and anyone in the mood for a little celebratory music festivities can check out the video below.
The original Defense Grid was released for the Xbox 360 and PC to moderate fanfare. Like many games released for XBLA, the title found itself competing with some stiff competition in a very crowded space. To be completely honest, Defense Grid was entirely niche, so getting a sequel from a publisher with moderate funding was going to be a long-shot.
However, Hidden Path Entertainment figured that a number of niche gamers would be inclined to contribute to a game that filled a tower-defense void in their heart, which is why they took their campaign for funding to Kickstarter.
As stated by Hidden Path...
"The minimum threshold of $250,000 has been crossed and we still have 3 days left to grow that number and see if we can accomplish even more. Defense Grid: Containment is coming and multiplayer for DG1 could still be reached. Everything raised over the minimum reduces the amount we'll need to earn in the future or get from a new partner to fill the gap, and it will get us going on the DG2 sequel, which backers ($15+) will also get when it is completed."
I imagine that Hidden Path will probably take their cause to IndieGogo as well to raise some extra funds, which isn't uncommon in the crowd-source community. For now, the team still has a few days left on their Kickstarter and gamers interested in seeing the stretch goals met can contribute to the project right now or learn more by visiting the Official Defense Grid 2 Page.
