Leave it to the gaming community to take something like LittleBigPlanet and use it to recreate AMC's The Walking Dead>. That's exactly what happened when PSN user Blackbeltnick95 managed to create a side-scrolling, adventure-shooting rendition of the show.
You can check out the intro of The Walking Dead remade and redone in LittleBigPlanet 3 below, courtesy of LittleBigPlanet Show.
Game Informer did a brief write-up on the total conversion, pointing out the creative lengths that were traveled to bring the conversion to life.
The game actually does feature adventuring and shooting. It's still a side-scroller like most other LittleBigPlanet games. However, the project has the added ability for players to shoot guns, something that's not really prevalent or regularly featured in many other LittleBigPlanet creations.
Due to the limitations of the shooting mechanics, it does detract from the experience somewhat. We see how the reticule isn't entirely reliable and how the headshots are kind of janky. Nevertheless, the atmosphere, sounds and pacing are actually put together quite nicely in the episodic gameplay series based on the AMC television show. Check it out below.
One of the things I think he really did a nice job on – besides setting up the lighting and music to help reflect the dark atmosphere and themes of the show – is the use of the parallax backdrops new to LittleBigPlanet 3. During the intro sequence we see it used quite a bit to help recreate some of the imagery that was used during the intro of the television show.
In the actual game players can kind of move in and out of the environment to get through certain areas and activate various triggers to get the zombies flooding into the map. It's more of a story-based adventure title than a typical platformer or puzzler that you might be used to from LittleBigPlanet games.
There's a lot of detail put into this little series and I have to admit that the recreation of the intro alone is very impressive. We've also seen recreations of HBO's Game of Thrones in LittleBigPlanet, as well. However, the big difference between Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead for LittleBigPlanet is that there's actually a game accompanying the intro this time around. It's not terribly in-depth or heavy on the gameplay mechanics, but it's something, right?
If you enjoy creating (or recreating) popular culture within the confines of a multi-layered side-scrolling game creation tool-set, you can do so right now for the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 with LittleBigPlanet 3.
