Gamers have been following Telltale Games' The Walking Dead series since 2012. The episodic adventure horror game came barreling onto the scene in a huge way, winning tons of awards. Well, Telltale has now announced plans for the final season of The Walking Dead.

IGN captured the news coming out of this year's San Diego Comic-Con. It's being reported that in a brief behind-the-scenes clip, Telltale teased that the final season will star Clementine and that it will get underway starting in 2018 for the Xbox One, PS4, iOS, Android and PC gaming platforms.

According to the report, voice actress Melissa Hutchison will reprise her role as Clementine in the final chapter of the series, bringing closure to the events of Telltale's story, for better or for worse.

What's fascinating here is that Telltale already seems to know how the story will conclude, an entire year ahead of the final season's release.

The fifth episode in the third season, entitled The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, released this past spring. The third season followed the exploits of an ex-baseball player and gambling addict, Javier. There were some difficult decisions that players had to make throughout the game in order to save as many lives as possible.

Clementine's role in the fourth season was reduced to little more than a glorified sidekick for Javier. Your choices in the game and how you treated Clementine would determine how she could help you at the end of the game.

And of course it's impossible to talk about the fourth and final season without talking about what happened at the end of the third season, so if you haven't played it there are some spoilers ahead.

In Episode 5 of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier, players could either have Javier and Clementine rescue David and his son Gabe, or stick with Kate and help her repair the wall to the city in order to keep the zombies out. How you treated Clementine throughout the season will determine whether she accompanies Javier in helping Kate repair the wall, or whether she will go off on her own to save Gabe from David.

The endings vary wildly, with some people living and dying depending on what choices you made throughout season four. The best possible ending is having Kate and Gabe survive, along with the Doctor, which will result in Javier and Kate getting together and taking care of Gabe, while Clementine receives information from the Doctor on the whereabouts of AJ. The ending will setup Clementine's search for AJ after he ended up in another city.

Given how dark Telltale's take on The Walking Dead has been, it's hard to tell whether or not the player's decisions over the course of the last three seasons will result in something that leaves you crying or smiling by the time the credits roll.

Expect more details about the final season of The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series later this year. The studio still has to finish up Minecraft: Story Mode and Guardians of the Galaxy.
