Oculus Rift Delayed To March, 2013
Have you been desperately awaiting the Oculus Rift, that very snazzy looking Kickstarter project for a full 3D-scopic headset? Well, there's some slightly bad news: the Oculus Rift has been delayed and not by a little bit but all the way into March, 2013m which is now the new estimated date for when the development kits are expected to ship.
According to Blues News the Oculus Rift team posted a message about the status of the Rift and when it would be made available for mass developer consumption. You can check out the note below...
Designing, sourcing, and manufacturing thousands of developer kits is no small feat. Since our Kickstarter, we’ve been up against the wall, working around the clock to produce and distribute over 7,500 units in just 4 short, crazy months. We’ve had to modify our original design for mass-manufacturing and, at the same time, balance additional features with our tight schedule.
The first part was like an epic excuse while the other two thirds was typical apology and the drop of some bad news. Still, it's not like the Rift was some super-necessary gaming device and more time spent improving the design and kits for development will make it a pretty cool viable addition to some next-gen games due out next year and the year after.
It'll be very interesting to see how the Oculus is used for high-end first-person shooters and the emerging popularity of horror-themed adventure titles like Slender and Montas. More than anything, I want to see which one will actually meet positive consumer expectations first: Oculus Rift or OUYA. I guess we'll find out in 2013.
