If there’s one thing we know about the Vikings, it’s that they knew their way around the battlefield and sported some of the most epic beards in the history of man. Now Paradox Interactive is looking to bring both of those aspects to the PC with War of the Vikings, a brand new epic battle game scheduled to release in Q1 of 2014.
Developed by Fatshark, and as you might have guessed from the game’s title, War of the Vikings puts a new spin on Paradox’s previous medieval war game franchise, War of the Roses. More than just a re-skin of the same old game, however, War of the Vikings will offer a brand new multiplayer experience built on the previous game’s foundation. As a standalone entry, Vikings aims to “pull players into the brutal and bloody Viking Age, challenging them to design a personalized warrior and sack England as the might Norseman, or defend it as the brave Saxon,” according to a statement from Paradox.
Like War of the Roses, Vikings will feature up close and personal combat inspired with options, gear and weaponry inspired by history. And for those of you who like your battles on a grand scale, 64-player warfare should go a long way towards scratching that itch.
“War of the Roses was a fantastic experience for us to launch, and as it’s evolved over time, eventually growing into its current Kingmaker edition, we’ve been inspired many times over by the possibilities of the close-combat genre,” said Executive Producer Gordon Van Dyke. “It’s clear to us that there are many more experiences we can share with our players, and War of the Vikings is our next step in establishing Paradox and Fatshark as leaders in the art of online war.”
That sound an awful lot like other eras of combat might be in the works, doesn’t it? But why bother with speculating about the next iteration of the War series when we’ve got all of these wonderful Vikings to discuss.
Players will be able to band together on battlefields inspired by ninth and 10th century England, according to Paradox, and participate in combat that blends swinging, blocking and dodging. There will also be plenty of ranged combat options, such as arrows, spears and throwing axes.
Players will be able to beef up their own characters and squads with a perk system, as well as customize their own Viking with armor, weapons, taunts and, yes, a wide variety of beards.
Along with the massive 64-player skirmishes, players will be able to join in the new “hardcore” Pitched arena mode, pitting 32 players against one another with no respawns. You’ll also have access to a Training Ground to try out your new loadout before heading into battle.
War of the Vikings isn’t scheduled to arrive until early next year, but Paradox has announced that the game will be shown off during Gamescom later this month. There’s also a possibility to join the game’s Alpha build, which eager Vikings can sign up for by heading to the game’s official website.
