World Of Warcraft: Warlords Of Draenor Character Boost Is Essential, Blizzard Says
World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor will let each player boost one character to level 90 instantly. Creative director Alex Afrasiabi explained in a new interview that this feature is necessary at this stage in the MMORPG's life.
"It’s integral for this expansion, it’s integral for WoW at this point,” Afrasiabi told Games.on.net. “One of the problems we’ve seen over the years is that as the game gets older and better, but older and bigger, and just more content, and we keep adding levels – we can’t stop! – it becomes more and more difficult to get back into the game if you lapse.”
Leveling up is only part of the catch-up process that returning players face. They also have to re-learn how to play their character due to the extensive changes that come with each expansion or major patch. If they have a custom user interface, it's probably broken due to their addons going out-of-date. On top of all that, Afrasiabi says, "your bags are full of shit that you don’t know what to do with."
He added that they looked at many solutions to help veterans ease back into games. However, they found that players were very intimidated by the thought of being, say, 15 levels behind where they needed to be. They wanted to remove that psychological barrier altogether.
“You could certainly quadruple the current already multiplied experience rates, but it does also come to a point where it’s kind of ridiculous, you’re dinging five times off a kill, like, what purpose did that serve? It doesn’t quite work out for us, I think, it just makes the game feel sloppy, like you’re playing through this super accelerated game. We may as well give you a button to press to ding you.”
Players who Warlords of Draenor can choose either a new or existing character for the boost. The newly boosted character gets a fresh set of gear that's suited to their level and whatever specialization they chose. They'll also get some other essential gear like food and a flying mount. That should put them in a good position to dive right into the level 90-100 content featured in Draenor.
Blizzard is also selling these character boosts separately for $60 apiece. This allows players to raise up multiple characters if they want to.
Thousands of players have already pre-purchased Draenor to get their character boost. Early statistics for the boost suggest that warlocks are the most popular class to raise up to level 90.
Blizzard hasn't confirmed a release date for Warlords of Draenor yet. However, they expect the expansion to launch by December 20th.
