Alan Arkin Joins Jon Hamm For Baseball Drama Million Dollar Arm
Over the years, reality TV has become an arena where dreams can come true, if your dreams mostly involve fame whatever the costs. But for two Indian cricket players, reality TV proved the unlikely path to a career in Major League Baseball. This is the incredible true story being tackled in the soon-to-shoot drama Million Dollar Arm.
Penned by celebrated writer-director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent), Million Dollar Arm will star Jon Hamm as innovative sports agent J.B. Bernstein, who sought new pitching talent in a pool of 40,000 cricket enthusiasts through the reality television show Million Dollar Arm. Bernstein's gambit paid off when he discovered Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, who both went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Variety reports Alan Arkin is the latest actor to sign on to the project, which is set to shoot next month in Mumbai before the production moves to Atlanta. The storied actor who earned his fourth Academy Award nomination earlier this year for the based-on-real-events drama Argo will portray a retiredóand likely jadedóbaseball scout. With a masterful side-eye and sharp comedic timing, Arkin is a promising addition to any cast, but it's especially exciting to see what he'll do next to Hamm, who has deftly dazzled in drama and comedy alike.
With what is surely to be a stellar script, and a what's stacking up to be a sensational cast, Million Dollar Arm looks like it could be just the shot in the arm director Craig Gillespie needs following his disappointing 2011 remake of Fright Night, which earned little more than its budget back on its global box office.
