Thanks to the wonder of the world wide web, there has been a dramatic uprise in the number of old films getting 'new' trailers. Fans have taken to their video archives, editing software and the latest piece of dramatic music (from Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna" to Zack Hemsey's "Mind Heist" to audiomachine's "Judge and Jury") to approximate what a preview for a classic movie would look like if it was being marketed today.

But when there's a big anniversary release of a landmark film, studios themselves sometimes get into the game and Warner Bros. Home Video has given Ridley Scott's Blade Runner trailer an update. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the re-envisioned preview not only showcases the pristine new transfer of the beautifully photographed film (although 480p is a pretty weak way to advertise) but also implements music much more la mode. Take a look at Blade Runner The 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition...

It didn't use "Judge and Jury" (the Prometheus trailer cue) exactly but they might as well have. Not that it didn't work. The 30th Anniversary trailer makes Blade Runner look like the science fiction, film noir masterpiece while the original theatrical trailer really focussed on the detective story. I like the way the original cut (featured below) plays up the throwback noir sensibility but the new look is a much better representation of the size and scope Scott's most acclaimed (and tinkered with) work. Watch the original (try to ignore the horrid voice-over) and see what you prefer...

Blade Runner: 30th Anniversary Collector's Edition hits shelves on October 23, 2012. Oh, and Prometheus Blu-ray 3D (and all the home formats) will be released on October 11, 2012.
