Darren Aronofsky Directing Robocop Remake? image
Ain’t It Cool News has picked up on the actual scoop in today’s Hollywood Reporter piece, which is purportedly about the planned remake of Red Dawn and Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods. But way down at the bottom of the article—uh, Darren Aronofsky is planning to direct a Robocop remake??

The Reporter article says that Aronofsky, “among others,” has been visiting MGM to discuss the remake. But that’s an awfully prominent name-drop in the article, which indicates Aronofsky is probably one of the more serious candidates. So, um, what gives? Aronofsky has spent his career making exceedingly original movies, even when they don’t make a whole lot of sense (The Fountain, guys. I know it’s gorgeous, but what in God’s name is going on there?) So what’s he doing circling around a remake of an 80s franchise that most agree went off the rails after the first one?

Maybe Aronofsky can bring Robocop his singular vision and keep it from being yet another crappy remake. Or, well, maybe he’s just in it for the money. I’m also tempted to find out what an Aronofsky-directed Robocop would look like, but mostly I wish everyone would step away from this bad idea and take a tip from Darren: come up with something original for once.
