Earlier this week, there were reports that the search for a Hunger Games sequel director had been narrowed down to two candidates. Those two filmmakers were Bennett Miller, director of Moneyball and Capote, and Francis Lawrence, who made Water For Elephants, I Am Legend and Constantine. When reporting the news, I noted that it would be strange for Miller to take the job, as he is currently in development on his passion project, Foxcatcher, the story of John du Pont, and has already signed on Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. Today that logic is making a lot of sense as now it looks like the gig is Lawrence's to lose.

THR has learned from insiders that Lionsgate is on the verge of making Lawrence an official offer to helm Catching Fire, the sequel to the boxoffice hit The Hunger Games. The search for a new filmmaker has been on-going since earlier this month when it was revealed that Gary Ross, who both wrote and directed The Hunger Games, would not be back for part two. The trade says that both Miller and Lawrence had meetings with the studio today and that the executives have made their choice. The story doesn't say if Foxcatcher was one of the reasons why Miller wasn't chosen. Other directors considered for the job included Tomas Alfredson, Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, Cary Fukunaga, Joe Cornish and Duncan Jones.

So while the papers haven't been signed yet, what do you think of the possibility of Francis Lawrence directing Catching Fire? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
