Divergent Movie Teaser Image Promises Something Big Coming To The MTV VMAs

There are plenty of reasons to care about MTV's Video Music Awards, particularly if you're a fan of current music. This year, performers include Lady Gaga, Robin Thicke, Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars, all three are reason enough to tune in and watch. But if you're a fan of Veronica Roth's Divergent series, you have even more reason to check out this Sunday night's broadcast at the award show as the film promises "Something Big."

The image above is about as teasy as it gets, stating "Something big is coming," with the MTV VMA 2013 logo in the corner. The text is set over a very familiar scene from the book, with two silhouetted figures in view. We're presumably looking at Tris and Four as they climb the old ferris wheel, a feat that's more daunting for Four, who isn't such a fan of heights. And that is one big ferris wheel.

So what's this big thing that's coming? The obvious guess would be the first official trailer or teaser for the film. During the Summit panel, Comic-Con attendees got an eyeful of footage from the movie, including a pretty great glimpse of the moment Tris first sets her sights on Four. To my knowledge, that video has yet to make its way online. Perhaps that's what fans of the movie have to look forward to this Sunday night. If not the trailer, than maybe there's an unannounced appearance by Shaliene Woodley and/or Theo James planned. Maybe both. (Let's be greedy and hope for both.)

With Divergent not set to arrive in theaters until March 2014, Summit still has plenty of time to get promotions for the film rolling between now and then. With that said, the VMAs may be one of the last high-profile award shows with a teen/young adult audience between now and then, and the timing does feel right for our first bit of finished footage from the movie.

Of the young adult adaptations out there, Divergent seems like one of the movies that stands a better chance at coming close to Twilight/Hunger Games appreciation on the big screen than others. Here's hoping. If it doesn't, it won't be for lack of buzz. It doesn't hurt that Veronica Roth has the third and final novel in the trilogy set to release this fall. There's also a bonus book and four eShorts set to be published between now and when the Divergent film hits theaters. Just yesterday, we shared news that a sample of the first short eBook has made its way online, giving us some insight into a certain event in Four's life, which took place before the events of Divergent. So fans have plenty to look forward to from the franchise between now and March, and between Allegiant and the eShorts, there's plenty coming up on the book side to help build some promotional momentum for the film in the coming months. In the meantime, fingers crossed that this Sunday night's VMA's reveal some actual footage.

2013 “MTV Video Music Awards” LIVE from Barclays Center in Brooklyn on August 25 at 9:00pm ET/PT.
